Using Moneda

Are there prerequisites for signing up?

Very little. You need a smartphone and an email address, and you can sign up with Apple, Google, or email.

Your phone does need to support passkeys, since that is how you sign in and approve payments. That means a screen lock set up on the device, and Android 9 or later. Some third-party password managers need Android 14 or later.

To use features like virtual accounts, deposits, and withdrawals, you will also need to complete identity verification (KYC), but you can create your account first.

You can top up your account on Moneda via:

• Moneda: share your username and receive funds from friends on Moneda. • Bank transfers: transfer funds via SEPA (EU), ACH (US). • Cryptocurrencies: connect your desktop or mobile wallet to transfer EURC or USDC stablecoins on the Base network. How do I receive stablecoins on Moneda?

You can receive stablecoins on your Moneda account by sharing your account address, found in your account details (Home > Details > Crypto Wallet Details).

Make sure the sender transfers one of the stablecoins Moneda supports, on the Base network: USDC, EURC, CHFAU, CADD, or MXNB. Any other token sent to that address will not be accessible to you.

Using the wrong token or the wrong network could mean losing your funds or not being able to access them. When in doubt, ask the sender to transfer a small amount first.

How do I sign up to Moneda?

You can create a Moneda account in three ways:

  • Sign up with Apple
  • Sign up with Google
  • Sign up with Email, where Moneda sends a one-time code to confirm the address

Whichever you choose, you create a passkey during setup. This is what you will use to sign in and to approve payments, so your device needs a screen lock and a password manager that supports passkeys. Passkeys require Android 9 or later, and some third-party password managers need Android 14 or newer.

After that, onboarding asks for a few details such as your country of residence, a username, and, where offered, a referral code, and you can top up straight away.

Use an email address you will keep, and avoid aliases such as name+moneda@example.com, because they are not supported for account recovery.

How do I change the email on my account?

Go to Settings > Account, and choose to change your email. Enter the new address and confirm the code Moneda sends to it.

A few things to know:

  • For security, you will be asked to confirm it is really you before the change goes through.
  • You may need to sign in again afterwards.
  • Disposable email addresses are not accepted, and the address cannot already be in use by another Moneda account.
  • If you signed up with Google or Apple, the new address cannot belong to an account that already exists on Moneda.
  • There is a limit on how often you can request a change. If you hit it, wait and try again.

If your email is also your recovery email, review it in Settings > Security afterwards so recovery still points at an address you control.

Why should I verify my phone number?

Verifying your phone number does two things: it lets friends find you on Moneda by phone, and it is required to open a virtual banking account.

To verify, go to Settings > Account > Add phone number and enter the code sent by SMS. If it does not arrive you can request another one, and you can correct the number if you entered it wrong.

Moneda will never send you unauthorised messages. If you reach the maximum number of verification attempts, contact support.

You can control whether other people are allowed to find you by phone in Settings > Privacy > Search Privacy, separately from verifying the number.

What can I customise in the app settings?

Settings > App settings lets you adjust how Moneda looks and behaves:

  • Default currency, the currency your balances are shown in
  • Language
  • Theme, light, dark or system
  • Decimal separator, dot or comma
  • Animations
  • Haptic feedback, the small vibrations when you tap
  • Wrapped token tickers, show cbBTC and WETH in place of BTC and ETH

Changing your default currency only changes how amounts are displayed. It does not convert or move any money.

Animations are switched off automatically when your battery is at or below 20 percent, to save power.

How do I change my name on Moneda?

There are two different names on your Moneda account, and they change in different ways.

Your display name is what other people see on Moneda. You can change it yourself any time in Settings > Account > Display name.

Your legal name comes from the identity verification you completed when you opened your account. It is the name on your virtual accounts and on your identity documents, so it cannot be edited in the app. What happens next depends on why it needs to change.

Your name itself changed, for example a new surname after a marriage or a legal name change. Your identity has to be verified again against your new document, so you will go through verification once more with the updated ID.

Your name is right but was recorded wrongly, most often when a given name and surname were swapped. This is common with names that do not follow a first-name-then-surname order, and it does not need a new verification. Open Help Centre > Talk to Support in the app, ask to be passed to a human, and tell us the correct order. We fix it for you.

If you are not sure which applies, contact support and describe the problem rather than starting verification again.

Do not delete and recreate your account to fix a name. Deleting an account is permanent, it does not reset identity verification, and it terminates any virtual accounts you have.
