ChatGPT vs a Dedicated AI Investing App

Federico Kunze Küllmer is the founder of Moneda, one of the tools compared here.
Short answer: General chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude are good for learning, brainstorming and reading documents you give them. Perplexity Finance adds live market pages to a search engine. A dedicated AI investing app connects research to your real portfolio, shows the source behind each figure, and lets you act, with every trade approved by you. Many people use both: a chatbot for thinking, and an investing app (or a connector to one) for anything that touches their money.
Lots of people ask chatbots about stocks now. Fair enough: they are fast, patient and free to start. But "tell me about this company" and "should this go in my portfolio, given what I already hold" are different questions. Below we compare the main options so you can pick the right tool for each job.
We checked each product's official pages on 23 October 2026. Where a capability is not described in official documentation, we say "not documented" rather than guess. Products change quickly, so check the vendor's own site before relying on any single row.

What general chatbots do well
ChatGPT and Claude handle a lot of investing-adjacent work well.
Explaining ideas. Ask what a P/E (price-to-earnings) ratio is, meaning the share price divided by yearly profit per share, or why bond prices fall when rates rise. You get a clear answer, at your level, and you can keep asking "why?" until it clicks.
Reading long documents. Upload an annual report (in the US, the 10-K a company files each year) or an earnings call transcript and ask for the main risks. A good chatbot pulls them out in seconds. Checking the page numbers is still on you.
Thinking out loud. Chatbots are useful sparring partners. "What would have to go right for this company to double its revenue?" is a useful prompt. So is "argue the other side."
Broad search. With web search turned on, both ChatGPT and Claude can find recent news and summarise it. Claude lists web search on every plan, including Free.
Everything else in your life. A general assistant also writes your emails, plans your trip and fixes your spreadsheet. An investing app won't, and shouldn't.
Perplexity Finance sits in between. It is a market dashboard built into a search engine. When we checked, it showed live index futures, a sector heatmap, earnings, a screener, watchlists and market summaries with a count of sources behind each one. For a quick look at what moved today and why, it is a good free place to start.
Where general chatbots fall short for investing
The limits are not about intelligence. They are about context, data and action.
1. They do not know what you own
A chatbot sees only what you type. It does not know that you already hold three chip makers, so it cannot tell you that a fourth adds to the same risk. You can paste your holdings in, but that list goes stale the next time you trade.
2. Numbers can sound right without being right
Language models are trained to produce fluent text. Without tools, they can state a revenue figure or a margin that looks plausible and is simply wrong. Web search helps, but the answer may still blend sources, mix up fiscal years or quote a number with no link to where it came from.
We measured this. In Moneda's own tests in October 2026, answers from Moneda AI were grounded in source data 97.9% of the time. The same base model without tools scored 13% to 17%. For claim verifiability, meaning whether you could trace a claim back to its source, the figures were 92% versus 3%. Your results with any tool will vary, but the gap shows why sources matter more than fluency.
3. They stop at the answer
Research is only half the job. After you decide, you still need to open another app, find the asset, enter an amount and place the order. Every hand-off is a chance to make a mistake, or to act on a stale number.
4. Risk is hard to see in a chat window
"How would my portfolio have done in 2008?" is a simple question that needs your real holdings and real historical data. A general chatbot can describe 2008. It cannot run your portfolio through it unless you give it both.
What a dedicated AI investing app adds
A dedicated app starts from your account, not from a blank chat. Using Moneda as the example:
- Moneda AI is built on Numa 1, Moneda's financial AI engine. The agent researches stocks, ETFs (exchange-traded funds, baskets of assets that trade like one share), a few commodities through ETFs, and crypto, using filings and live market data.
- Filings and transcripts, built in. The agent pulls data straight from SEC filings and earnings-call transcripts, which you can search, and writes earnings summaries when a company reports.
- A stock screener. Describe what you are looking for and screen for companies that match.
- Every figure has a source. The agent shows where each number came from, so you can check it yourself.
- Both sides of the case. For any asset, you get a bull case and a bear case, not a sales pitch.
- Your portfolio, tracked. The agent builds and tracks a portfolio with you, and alerts you when something changes.
- Stress tests. See how your holdings might behave in scenarios like 2008, 2020 and 2022.
- Research and investing in one place. You can invest in US-listed shares, ETFs and crypto in the same app. Every trade is approved by you with your passkey.
- No recommendations. The agent never tells you to buy or sell. It lays out the facts and the trade-offs. The decision stays with you.
A specialised app isn't smarter. It has your data, knows what you hold, and leaves the final call with you. That is Moneda's focus: research and invest in one app, with your approval on every trade. Most tools do one or the other.
Where Moneda stops. It invests in US-listed shares and ETFs only, so no European-listed stocks or funds.
How a connector (MCP) lets ChatGPT or Claude work with a real account
You do not have to choose one or the other. The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant use tools and data from another service. Think of it as a secure plug between your chatbot and an app.
ChatGPT and Claude both support it:
- Claude supports custom connectors using remote MCP on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Free users can add one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise, an admin adds the connector and members then connect their own accounts.
- ChatGPT supports MCP servers through its apps and plugins, which can bring live data and tools into a conversation. Exact plan availability and confirmation rules for actions are set by OpenAI; check its help pages for the current details.
Moneda MCP connects Claude and ChatGPT to your Moneda account. Here is how it is designed to stay safe:
- You set the permissions. You choose what the assistant can see and do.
- Read and write are separate. You can let an assistant read your portfolio without letting it change anything.
- Payments are approved in the app. If an assistant prepares a payment, nothing moves until you approve it in Moneda.
So you can keep chatting in the assistant you already like, with answers based on your real account. For developers and power users, Moneda also offers a REST API and a CLI on Premium and Ultra.
A good rule for any connector, from any provider: give the least access you need, keep write access off until you want it, and never let a tool move money without your own approval.
Which should you use?
| Your job | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Learning the basics or reading a report you already have | A general chatbot (ChatGPT, Claude) |
| Checking what moved in the market today | Perplexity Finance or any good market dashboard |
| Researching an asset against what you already own, with sources you can check, then investing | A dedicated AI investing app such as Moneda: research and invest in one app, with your approval on every trade |
| Keeping your chatbot but using your real account | Connect it through MCP, such as Moneda MCP: Claude or ChatGPT with the permissions you set, payments you approve |
FAQ
Can ChatGPT give me live stock prices?
It can look up recent prices with web search. OpenAI does not document a dedicated real-time market data feed. For live prices tied to your holdings, use an investing app or a connector to one.
Is it safe to connect ChatGPT or Claude to my investing account?
It depends on the connector. Look for separate read and write permissions, the ability to revoke access, and a rule that money only moves after you approve it in the app. Moneda MCP works this way.
Does Moneda AI tell me what to buy?
No. The agent researches, shows its sources, gives the bull and bear case and stress tests your portfolio. It never tells you to buy or sell.
What can I invest in with Moneda?
US-listed shares, ETFs and crypto, all in the same app. Every trade is approved by you with your passkey.
How much does Moneda cost?
Standard is free. Premium starts from €9.99 a month and Ultra from €19.99 a month. The REST API and CLI are included on Premium and Ultra.
Can I use Claude's free plan with Moneda MCP?
Claude's Free plan allows one custom connector, according to Anthropic's help centre. That is enough to connect a single service such as Moneda.
