Which AI Shows Where Every Number Comes From? (2026)

Federico Kunze Küllmer is the founder of Moneda, one of the tools compared here.
Short answer: if you want an AI that researches a stock and shows the source behind each figure, pick a tool built around financial data rather than a general chatbot. Moneda AI shows where every number comes from and searches SEC filings and earnings-call transcripts. Fiscal.ai links each figure in its data back to the filing. Perplexity Finance cites the sources behind its market summaries. Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini can show links when they search the web, but nothing makes them tie every figure to a filing. Whatever you use, open the source for the two or three numbers your decision rests on.
- Best for research with a source behind every figure, plus investing: Moneda (Standard free; Premium from €9.99/month)
- Best for raw financial data you can audit to the filing: Fiscal.ai (price not published; 7 day free trial)
- Best for cited market news: Perplexity Finance (free to view; Pro $17/month billed annually)
- Best general assistant with citations on web search: Claude (free plan; Pro from $17/month billed yearly)
- Also worth knowing: Gemini and ChatGPT, which can show sources for some answers
Why sources matter
Language models can state a wrong number with total confidence. Ask one for a company's free cash flow (the cash left after running the business and paying for investment) and it may give you a figure from the wrong year, the wrong unit, or nowhere at all. That last one is called a hallucination: the model makes up something that sounds right.
With a source, you can check a claim instead of taking it on trust. If an answer says revenue was $10 billion and links to the annual report, you can open it and look. If it gives you nothing, you can't.
Whether a chatbot should pick stocks on its own is another question. We looked at a public experiment on that in Can AI pick stocks?.

The tools, one by one
Moneda
- What it is: an app where you research and invest in one place. The research is done by Moneda AI, the agent, which runs on Numa 1, Moneda's financial AI model.
- How it handles sources: it works figures out from company filings and live market data and shows the source behind each one. You can search SEC filings and earnings-call transcripts and read the passage yourself.
- What else it does: it gives the case for and against a stock, sends a daily briefing, writes earnings summaries after each report and has a screener. It can import a portfolio you hold elsewhere as a paper portfolio, stress test it against past crashes and compare it with gold or an index.
- Investing: US-listed stocks and ETFs (funds you buy like a single share) and crypto in the same app. Stocks are tokenized through Dinari, which means you hold a token that tracks the share price, not the share itself, and you get no voting rights. You approve every trade with your passkey, and the agent never tells you to buy or sell. US users can sign up too.
- Moneda's own tests (October 2026): 97.9% groundedness (how often answers are backed by their sources), 92% claim verifiability, 95.6% on FLARE-CFA, and 80% on the public set of the Vals AI Finance Agent Benchmark v2, run and graded by Moneda. Vals AI's top published score, 65.4%, is on its private set, so the two aren't directly comparable. Details on the Numa 1 page.
- Honest limitation: it only invests in US-listed shares and ETFs, so no European-listed stocks or funds.
- Price: Standard is free. Premium from €9.99/month, Ultra €19.99/month, with 1, 5 or 10 commission-free trades a month depending on plan.
Fiscal.ai
- What it is: a financial data terminal, plus a data API and MCP connectors for AI tools (fiscal.ai).
- How it handles sources: it pulls numbers from filings and investor relations material, has human analysts check them, and links every figure back to its source as an image, PDF or URL.
- Best for: people who want clean numbers to build their own analysis.
- Honest limitation: it is a data tool, not an app you invest through. Prices aren't published.
Perplexity Finance
- What it is: the finance section of Perplexity, an AI answer engine.
- How it handles sources: its market summary updates through the day and lists how many sources sit behind it. Perplexity's paid plans advertise inline citations.
- Best for: a quick, cited read on why the market or a stock moved today.
- Honest limitation: it summarises news. Its pages don't say it ties figures to the filing they came from.
Claude
- What it is: Anthropic's general AI assistant.
- How it handles sources: Anthropic's help page says every web search answer includes citations, so you can check them. Web search works on the free plan too.
- Best for: reading a 10-K with you and explaining what the terms mean.
- Honest limitation: citations come from whatever pages it finds. Ask it to use the filing itself.
Gemini
- What it is: Google's AI assistant.
- How it handles sources: Google says Gemini "may provide links to sources" through a Sources button. If there is no button, that answer has no links.
- Best for: long reports through Deep Research, and searching your own Gmail or Drive if you allow it.
- Honest limitation: sources are optional and their quality varies.
ChatGPT
- What it is: OpenAI's general AI assistant.
- How it handles sources: OpenAI's pricing and help pages blocked our checks in October 2026, so we won't describe how it cites. Check whether the answer you get links to anything at all.
- Best for: general questions and files you upload.
- Honest limitation: it isn't built around filings. Check every number.
Use Claude or ChatGPT with Moneda
If you already like Claude or ChatGPT, you don't have to choose. Moneda MCP connects Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP client to your Moneda account with the permissions you set. Payments are still approved in the app. On Premium and Ultra there is also a REST API and a CLI. More on the developers page, or follow our setup guide.
How to check a figure yourself
It takes five minutes and needs no special tools.
- Ask for the source. For example: "What was Costco's revenue last fiscal year? Name the filing and the page."
- Open the filing. US companies file with the SEC. The annual report is the 10-K and the quarterly one is the 10-Q. Our guide on reading a 10-K with AI shows where things are.
- Find the number. Search the document for the line, such as "Total revenue". Check the year and the unit, because filings often report in millions.
- Check the maths. If the AI calculated something, like a growth rate, redo it with the two numbers from the filing.
- If you can't find it, don't use it. A figure with no source, or a source that doesn't contain it, is unconfirmed.
You don't need to check everything. Check the numbers your decision rests on. There's more on this in Can you trust AI for investment research?
