How to Connect Claude or ChatGPT to Your Investments (MCP)

Federico Kunze Küllmer is the founder of Moneda, one of the tools compared here.
Short answer: MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI apps like Claude and ChatGPT connect to outside services. To link one to your investments, your investment app has to offer an MCP server. You paste its address into Claude (Customize > Connectors > Add custom connector) or ChatGPT (Plugins > Add custom MCP server), sign in, and choose what the AI can see and do. Then you can ask about your own holdings in plain language. Keep any action that moves money behind your own approval, and check every number against the source.
What MCP is, in one paragraph
The official MCP site calls it an open source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems, and compares it to a USB-C port for AI. Without it, Claude or ChatGPT only knows what you paste into the chat. With it, the AI can call tools that a service exposes, such as "get my balance" or "list my transactions", and answer from your real data instead of a screenshot you typed out by hand.
For investors that matters for one reason: the answer starts from your actual portfolio. "Am I too concentrated in tech?" is a much better question when the AI can see what you hold.
What you need before you start
- An AI app that supports remote MCP connectors. Claude and ChatGPT both document this (details below).
- An investment app that runs an MCP server. Most brokers do not offer one yet, so check your provider's help pages first.
- A few minutes to decide on permissions. This is the part people skip, and it is the part that matters most.
Step 1: Find your provider's MCP server address
The address is a URL, usually something like https://mcp.yourprovider.com. Your investment app should publish it in its help centre or developer docs. If you cannot find one, the provider probably does not support MCP yet, and no amount of setup on the AI side will change that.
Moneda is one example. Moneda MCP connects Claude and ChatGPT to your Moneda account with the permissions you set, so you choose what each agent can see and do.
Step 2: Add the connector in Claude
Anthropic's help centre says custom remote MCP connectors work on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Free users get one custom connector.
On Pro and Max, the steps are:
- Go to Customize > Connectors.
- Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
- Give it a name and paste the server URL, then click Continue.
- Review the authentication settings and choose how to sign in.
- Click Add.
On Team and Enterprise, an owner adds the connector under Organization settings > Connectors, and each member then connects it for themselves from Customize > Connectors. On Team plans only Owners and Primary Owners can add one.
Step 3: Or add it in ChatGPT
OpenAI's developer docs describe this path from ChatGPT Plugins:
- Select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server.
- Enter the server URL and the sign-in details.
- Read the risk warning and confirm you want to continue.
- Choose Create as a plugin, then install it.
That page does not say which ChatGPT plans can do this, so check your plan's settings before you assume it is available.
| Claude | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Where to add it | Customize > Connectors > Add custom connector | Plugins > Add custom MCP server |
| Plans documented | Free (one connector), Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise | Not stated on the page we checked |
| Who adds it on team plans | Owners and Primary Owners | Not stated |
Step 4: Sign in and set permissions
When you connect, the AI app usually sends you to your provider to sign in. This is where you decide what the AI is allowed to touch. A sensible starting point:
- Read only first. Let the AI see balances, holdings and history. Hold off on anything that can place a trade or send money.
- One agent, one purpose. If you use both Claude and ChatGPT, you do not have to give them the same access.
- Money moves need you. Any payment or trade should require your approval in your own app, not a "yes" typed into a chat.
In Moneda, payments started through MCP are approved in the app, and every trade is approved by you with your passkey (your face or fingerprint). The AI can propose. It cannot spend.
Step 5: Ask useful questions
Start with questions that are easy to check. Once you trust the answers, move to harder ones. Some examples:
- "What are my five largest holdings and what share of my portfolio is each?"
- "How much of my portfolio is in one sector, and which holdings put it there?"
- "What did I buy and sell last month, and what did each trade cost me in fees?"
- "Compare my portfolio's return this year with a broad US index fund."
- "Which of my holdings report earnings in the next two weeks?"
- "Explain in plain English what an ETF is and which of mine are ETFs." (An ETF, or exchange-traded fund, is a basket of investments you can buy as one share.)
Good prompts name a time period, ask for the numbers behind the answer, and ask the AI to say when it does not know.
Step 6: Verify what matters yourself
A connected AI is reading your data, but it can still misread it, round badly or mix up two tickers. Before you act on anything:
- Check the totals. Compare the AI's portfolio value and position sizes with what your investment app shows.
- Check the source of any company figure. If the AI quotes a P/E ratio (price divided by earnings per share) or free cash flow (cash left after the business pays for upkeep and investment), ask where it came from. The primary source for a US company is its 10-K, the annual report it files with the SEC.
- Treat valuations as opinions. A DCF (discounted cash flow, an estimate of what future cash is worth today) depends entirely on its assumptions. Ask to see them.
- Watch for confident gaps. A "moat" (a lasting edge that keeps competitors out) is a judgement call. If the AI states it as fact, ask for the evidence and the counter-argument.
General AI chat or an investing app's own agent?
Connecting Claude or ChatGPT is handy if you already live in those apps. Some investing apps also build their own agent next to your account. Here is how the options compare, based on each vendor's published documentation.
| Option | How it reaches your data | Where money moves are approved | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude with a custom connector | Remote MCP server you add | Depends on the provider you connect | People who already use Claude daily |
| ChatGPT with a custom MCP server | Remote MCP server added as a plugin | Depends on the provider you connect | People who already use ChatGPT daily |
| Moneda AI, inside the Moneda app | Built into your account | In the app, with your passkey | People who want to connect Claude or ChatGPT with the permissions they set, and approve every payment themselves |
Moneda AI is built on Numa 1, Moneda's financial AI engine. It researches stocks, ETFs, crypto and a few commodities through ETFs (gold, silver, oil), working from company filings and live market data and showing the source behind each figure. It gives the bull and bear case, scores a company's 7 Powers, checks quality of earnings, and can build an illustrative portfolio from your goal and stress-test it against 2008, 2020 and 2022. It also sends daily briefings on your portfolio and the market, and earnings summaries for the companies you follow. In Moneda's own tests in October 2026 it scored 97.9% on groundedness; Moneda ran that test itself, not an independent auditor. It never tells you to buy or sell.
Honest limit: you can invest in US-listed shares and ETFs only, so no European-listed stocks or funds.
What it costs
- Claude: custom connectors are on Free (one connector), Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Check Anthropic's pricing page for current plan prices.
- ChatGPT: plan availability for custom MCP servers is not documented on the page we checked.
- Moneda: Moneda MCP connects to your account; the REST API and CLI are on Premium (from €9.99/month) and Ultra (from €19.99/month). Standard is free.
FAQ
Is it safe to connect an AI to my investment account?
It can be, if you control the permissions. Start read only, keep trades and payments behind approval in your own app, and remove the connector when you stop using it.
Can Claude or ChatGPT place trades for me?
Only if your provider's MCP server offers that tool and you allow it. With Moneda, every trade still needs your passkey in the app.
Does my broker support MCP?
Look in its help centre or developer docs for an MCP server URL. If there is none, it does not support it yet.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Adding a connector in Claude or ChatGPT means pasting a URL and signing in.
Will the AI give me investment advice?
General AI chats may offer opinions. Moneda AI does not tell you to buy or sell; it lays out the data and both sides so you decide.
