Best AI Tools to Benchmark Your Portfolio (2026)

Guides
Moneda Learnings Series

Federico Kunze Küllmer is the founder of Moneda, one of the tools compared here.

Short answer: Benchmarking means comparing your portfolio's return with something you could have held instead, like an index fund or gold. If you want an AI to do the comparison and explain the result in plain English, an investing app with an agent built in saves the most work. If you only want numbers, a backtesting site is cheaper. General chatbots can help too, but only with the data you give them.

  • Best overall for individual investors: Moneda (free; Premium from €9.99/month): benchmarks against gold, an index or any fund with the source behind each figure, can analyse portfolios you import from other brokers or apps, and you can invest in the same app
  • Best for tracking holdings from many brokers: Snowball Analytics (free; paid from $79.99/year)
  • Best for European investors who want AI portfolio analysis: getquin (free; Premium €89.99/year)
  • Best for free historical backtests: Portfolio Visualizer (free; Basic $30/month billed annually)
  • Best general assistant for explaining results: Claude (free; Pro $20/month)
  • Best general assistant inside Google's apps: Gemini (free; Google AI Pro €21.99/month)

What to look for

A benchmark answers one question: did my choices beat the simple option? Here is what decides whether a tool answers it well.

  1. Your real holdings. The tool needs your actual positions and dates. If you have to retype them, you will stop doing it after a month.
  2. A fair benchmark. A portfolio of tech stocks should be compared with a tech index or a broad index, not with cash. Look for a tool that lets you pick the benchmark, including gold or a specific fund.
  3. Sources you can check. An AI that says "you beat the S&P 500 by 4 points" should show where that figure came from. If it cannot, treat it as a guess.
  4. Risk, not only return. Beating an index by taking far more risk is not the same as beating it. Stress tests against bad years (2008, 2020, 2022) show how a portfolio behaved when markets fell.
  5. Plain explanations. Terms like ETF (exchange traded fund: a basket of shares that trades like a single share) and P/E (price to earnings: the share price divided by yearly profit per share) should be explained, not assumed.
  6. Price you will keep paying. Benchmarking is a habit. A free tier that covers it beats a premium tool you cancel.

The tools

1. Moneda

What it is. An investing app (mobile and web), built in Berlin, with an agent called Moneda AI that runs on Numa 1, Moneda's financial AI engine.

What the AI does. You can ask the agent to benchmark your portfolio against gold, an index or any fund. It works the figures out from the data and shows the source behind each one. It can also build an illustrative portfolio from a goal you describe, track it, tell you when something changes, and stress-test it against 2008, 2020 and 2022. For single companies it gives the bull and bear case, scores a company's 7 Powers (seven kinds of moat, meaning a lasting advantage over competitors), checks quality of earnings and gives a Moneda Ratio, a descriptive 1 to 7 scorecard. It sends a daily briefing on your portfolio and the market. It never tells you to buy or sell.

Data covered. Stocks, ETFs, crypto, and gold, silver and oil through ETFs. Research draws on data pulled straight from company filings (like the 10-K, the annual report US companies file with regulators), searchable SEC filings and earnings-call transcripts, and live market data. You can also import portfolios you hold at other brokers or apps as paper portfolios, and the agent will analyse the stocks and your positions. You can invest in the same app: fractional US-listed shares and ETFs, plus crypto. You approve every trade with your passkey (face or fingerprint). Moneda MCP lets Claude and ChatGPT connect to your account with the permissions you choose. REST API and CLI access come with Premium and Ultra.

Price. Standard is free. Premium starts at €9.99/month. Ultra starts at €19.99/month, with more AI usage and 1, 5 or 10 commission-free trades a month.

Best for. Stress tests against 2008, 2020 and 2022, and benchmarking against gold or an index, with the source behind every figure, then investing in the same app with your approval on every trade.

Moneda's own tests (October 2026). Groundedness 97.9%, claim verifiability 92%, FLARE-CFA 95.6%, and 80% on the public set of the Vals AI Finance Agent Benchmark v2, which Moneda ran and graded itself. Vals AI's top published score, 65.4%, is on its private set, which is a different set.

One honest limitation. You can invest in US-listed shares and ETFs only, so no European-listed stocks or funds.

2. Snowball Analytics

What it is. A portfolio tracker for holdings spread across brokers.

What the AI does. Its pricing page lists an MCP feature (marked new) on the Expert plan and links to a guide on connecting Snowball to Claude, Cursor and other AI apps. The page does not describe the feature further.

Data covered. Your tracked holdings. Free and Starter benchmark against index funds only. Investor and Expert can benchmark against any asset; Investor lists "Full Benchmarking".

Price. Free. Starter $79.99/year, Investor $149.99/year, Expert $249.99/year.

Best for. Investors with accounts at several brokers who want one view and a benchmark line.

One honest limitation. The AI connection is only on the top plan, and the page does not say what it can do.

3. getquin

What it is. A wealth tracker that connects to banks and brokers.

What the AI does. Premium includes "AI-powered portfolio analysis". Wealth adds unlimited access to AI financial agents. The pricing page does not explain how either works.

Data covered. Linked bank and broker accounts, with real time financial data and a net worth overview.

Price. Free. Premium €89.99/year. Wealth €149.99/year (excluding local taxes).

Best for. European investors who want net worth, dividends and AI analysis together.

One honest limitation. The pricing page does not mention benchmark comparisons, so check before paying for that reason.

4. Portfolio Visualizer

What it is. A backtesting site: you enter a portfolio and see how it would have done in the past.

What the AI does. Its pricing page does not mention AI features. It is on this list because it is the usual reference point for historical comparisons.

Data covered. Portfolio and asset class backtests. Custom Data Series lets you create or import return series to use as assets and benchmarks. Free allows up to 15 assets with limited history; Basic and Pro allow up to 150.

Price. Free. Basic $30/month and Pro $55/month, both billed annually.

Best for. Testing "what if I had held this mix since 2010" for free.

One honest limitation. No AI to explain the output, and it does not hold your live portfolio.

5. Claude

What it is. A general AI assistant from Anthropic.

What the AI does. It can read a spreadsheet or statement you upload, calculate returns, compare them with benchmark figures you supply and explain the gap. It can also connect to tools through MCP, including Moneda MCP.

Data covered. Only what you give it or what a connected tool gives it.

Price. Free. Pro $17/month billed annually or $20/month monthly. Max from $100/month.

Best for. Turning numbers into a clear explanation, or working through a DCF (discounted cash flow: valuing a company by its future cash, adjusted to today's money).

One honest limitation. Without a data connection it relies on the figures you paste, so a wrong input gives a confident wrong answer.

6. Gemini

What it is. Google's AI assistant.

What the AI does. The same kind of help as Claude: reading files you share, doing the maths and explaining it.

Data covered. What you provide. The subscriptions page does not describe market data features.

Price. Free. Google AI Plus €4.99/month, Google AI Pro €21.99/month, Google AI Ultra from €99.99/month.

Best for. People who keep their portfolio spreadsheet in Google's apps.

One honest limitation. No investing-specific features are documented on its plans page.

7. ChatGPT

What it is. OpenAI's AI assistant.

What the AI does. It can analyse a portfolio file you upload and explain the comparison. It can also connect to your Moneda account through Moneda MCP, with the permissions you set.

Data covered. What you provide or connect.

Price. Price not verified: OpenAI's pricing page did not load when we checked.

Best for. People who already use it daily.

One honest limitation. Like other general assistants, it does not know your holdings unless you share them, and it cannot check its own inputs.

How to run a simple benchmark

Pick one benchmark that matches what you own. For a mix of US shares, a broad US index fund is fair. Note your start date and the money you added along the way, because new deposits change the return. Then compare total return, dividends included, over the same period. Last, look at the worst year. If your portfolio fell twice as far as the benchmark in 2022, the extra return may have cost more than it looks.

One more check worth doing: free cash flow (the cash a company has left after paying for running and growing the business) tells you more about a holding's strength than a single good year of returns does.

FAQ

What is a portfolio benchmark?

It is the investment you compare your own results with, usually an index fund. If you could have earned more by holding one ETF, your picks cost you money.

Can ChatGPT or Claude benchmark my portfolio?

Yes, if you give them your holdings and the benchmark's returns, or connect them to an account through a tool such as Moneda MCP. On their own they do not know what you own.

Which benchmark should I use?

One that looks like your portfolio. Broad US shares go with a broad US index. Gold is a useful second check if you want to know whether you beat a simple store of value.

Is a free tool good enough?

Often, yes. Moneda Standard, Snowball Analytics Free, getquin Free and Portfolio Visualizer Free all cost nothing, with limits listed above.

Does Moneda tell me what to buy?

No. Moneda AI researches and explains, and it can build an illustrative portfolio, but it never tells you to buy or sell. Every trade is yours to approve with your passkey.
